St. John the Evangelist located in Leonia, NJ is part of the Archdiocese of Newark.
The first Mass was celebrated on Sunday, May 26, 1912 with The Very Rev. Provincial, Dion F. Best, of the Order of the Carmelites, as celebrant in a vacant store on Grand Avenue between Hillside and Central Ave (now Fort Lee Road). In December 1913, Rev. Stephen J. McDonald, O. Carm,., was given permanent charge of the new mission. One of his first acts was to purchase an unused Methodist church located at Kingsley and Harrison Street which served the parish until December 1940 when the existing Church, located at 470 Broad Avenue was completed.
