First Penance Preparation for children for First Penance will begin for children who have been baptized and have completed Religious Education for one year. The Faith Formation classroom study for Grade 2 will complement Sacramental Preparation given the child at home with parents. Older children who present for the Sacraments will be placed in grade level and be prepared by the parents with guidance of the Director of Religious Ed. Parent meetings are held for all sacrament preparations for their children.
There is a First Reconciliation Retreat planned during the period of preparation. The retreat is a wonderful experience for the family to come to know reconciliation through God’s mercy and peace.
The Church community assists and encourages all her members to live and celebrate the gift of reconciliation. Families with children preparing for the Sacrament of Penance are entitled to the wisdom, support and resources of the church as they help to develop the sensitive consciences of the children.
“Parents are the first and foremost catechists of their children” “They catechize informally but powerfully by example and instruction” (National Directory for Catechesis #212)
Reconciliation is a part of daily life of every Christian home. The ability to look at oneself honestly, assess one’s attitudes and actions, recognize their effect on others, repent, seek forgiveness and change, is a part of the continuing conversion which takes place in family relationships. Parents have a responsibility to deepen the faith life of all family members so that continuous conversion takes place in each individual and in family community as a whole.
After careful preparation the child celebrates 1st Reconciliation/Penance/Confession by the 2nd week of December.
